Beachside Plumbing Services and its subsidiary, H2ouse has emerged as clear winners in the 2009 GreenPlumber® of the Year awards held recently in Melbourne.
Taking the organisation into the technology age – a water monitoring and validation device was installed to provide updates every 15 minutes through an internet website providing confirmation of the ongoing savings, a necessary tool to gain further government grants.
Six waterless urinals saving approximately 200,000 litres of water a year will enable further cost savings and a reduced environmental impact in relation to landfill.
In addition, the Solar Hot Water system providing 70 per cent solar gain efficiency, installed to the Open Door facility will contribute to the significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
Beachside Plumbing Services and H2ouse are fast garnering leadership status in the area of environmental audits and sustainable plumbing with any eye on corporate and government clients.
“Environmental plumbing is a natural evolutionary process for our industry,” says Glenn.
“As plumbers, we have a responsibility to protect the resource that is the lifeblood of our business and our earth.
“Initiatives such as the GreenPlumber® Awards help boost awareness of this need and give plumbers the opportunity to excel at their trade bringing about tremendous dividends for the householder, building owner or local council,” he said.
Away from customers and environmental audits, Glenn is one of the MPMSAA’s trainer in its national GreenPlumber® Training and Accreditation Program.
MPMSAA CEO, Mr Ken Gardner says Australia leads the way in sustainable plumbing and it is plumbing businesses like Glenn Howard’s that are truly worthy of global acknowledgement.

“The breadth of innovation in water saving and energy efficient technologies and the passion shown by our green plumbers is to be commended,” says Mr Gardner.

“Glenn is a true leader in the area of sustainable plumbing and as a plumbing industry stalwart he is part of the new generation of plumbers keen to do their bit for the environment as well as their clients.
“At the end of the day. it is our green plumbers who can effect real change in consumer behaviour - be it a householder looking for more cost-effective solutions or a commercial entity keen to reduce its carbon footprint by exploring the initiatives that can be adopted to bring about energy and water savings,” he said.

Sponsored by Master Plumbers Insurance Brokers (MPIB) and QBE Insurance, the awards acknowledge the pioneering efforts by both organisations and their director, Glenn Howard, a passionate green advocate who has more than 20 years of hard work and entrepreneurialism under his belt.
Beachside Plumbing Services was recognised by the Master Plumbers’ and Mechanical Services Association of Australia (MPMSAA) for its contribution to water and energy savings while Glenn was acknowledged for his years of commitment and the key role he plays in training other plumbers and spreading the ‘green plumbing’ message.
The prestigious awards recognise the ‘greenest of the green’ in Australia – a select group of plumbers who have taken that extra step in their commitment towards creating sustainable rainwater harvesting and greywater treatment systems and solar hot water and other energy saving initiatives in homes and workplaces around the nation.
With core operations in the area of general plumbing maintenance, environmental plumbing installations and consultancy, the two entities are forging a path to industry leadership.
Winners of the Commercial Project of the Year, Beachside Plumbing joined with H2ouse to devise and implement a strategy to bring three Salvation Army homeless shelters into the 21st Century with state of the art installations to reduce water and energy usage.

Focussing on the most efficient methods to reduce water and energy usage, H2ouse made recommendations that would result in a saving of 3.18 million litres of water and a reduction of 19.2 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
Beachside Plumbing Services then implemented the plan with the installation of two 28,000-litre rainwater tanks and another 12,000-litre smaller tank enabling 68,000 litres of total storage capacity for outdoor and service area wash-downs and garden irrigation.
